Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, has been a site of exceptionally rich cultural exchange. In the l9th century, Laura Gonzenbach began collecting local fairy tales and translating them into German; her publication influenced the course of the European fantasy. She herself was inspired by the activities of Giuseppe Pitrè, a doctor from Palermo and a pioneer of literary ethnography. Marina Warner will sift their remarkable anthologies and draw out the interactions of Arabic, Arthurian, and romance traditions, with a special focus on tales about the world under the sea, where Morgan Le Fay, King Arthur’s half-sister, conjures illusions of castles in the air over the Straits of Messina. 

Dame Marina Warner war von 2004 bis 2014 Professorin am Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies der University of Essex. Sie ist Honorary Fellow der Lady Margaret Hall an der University of Oxford sowie Distinguished Fellow des All Souls College ebenfalls an der University of Oxford. 2015 wurde sie für ihre literarischen Verdienste zur Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire geadelt, seit 2017 ist sie Präsidentin der Royal Society of Literature, seit 2005 ist sie Mitglied der British Academy. Sie erhielt Ehrendoktorwürden unter anderem vom King’s College London, von der University of Oxford und dem Royal College of Art. Unter den zahlreichen Auszeichnungen für ihr literarisches und wissenschaftliches Schaffen sind unter anderem die British Academy Medal und der World Fantasy Award für ihr Lebenswerk, der Holberg-Preis für ihre literaturwissenschaftliche Arbeit sowie der Mythopoeic Award für ihre Studie „From the Beast to the Blonde“.
